Boys And Girls II

Boys: like building blocks, anything with wheels, bouncey balls, Transformers

Girls: like flinging building blocks around, anything with wheels, bouncey balls, whatever gor gor is holding

Boys: major OCD for anything out of their rightful place in the universe and cleanliness

Girls: major compulsion for shifting things out of their place in the universe (see Building Blocks) and enjoys picking random dirt particles on the floor for personal consumption

Boys: indifferent to being styled or looking like a homeless hobo

Girls: enjoys the odd ribbon or hairband on their head for a few seconds before going bald from yanking said ribbon/hairband/rubber band out of their hair

Boys: indifferent to wearing sandals, slippers or covered shoes

Girls: admires the pretty pink shoes on their feet for a few minutes before dismembering said pretty pink shoes on a  long car journey (and irritating the hell out of mum who needs to put them on again when desired destination is reached). Decidedly has a shoe fetish.

Boys: loves their broccoli, salmon skin, fried rice and all junk food. Loathes ice cream and durian for some strange reason.

Girls: gets fishy breath from eating beloved fish porridge and spits out all traces of minced pork before the discovery of soya sauce. Does not mind durian or stinky dried crispy cuttlefish *shudder*

Boys: as good natured and easy-going as they come

Girls: scream their lungs out when they do not get their way

Same same but different...

Ferragamo or Melissa?

Scholl!

Where did my shoes go??

Neh mind, I play fire engine instead.

Indifferent to looking like a ge tai singer

Indifferent to looking like a typhoon-blown mad man

Few seconds before she yanks them off

Walking Home

The time has come.

Time for the toddler to leave the confines of mama's baby carrier and be hoisted instead into the now-very-squashy embrace of the baby seat in her chariot when going home.

Very drama hor? The paragraph on top just means that I have given up on lugging a 12.3kg toddler who would insist on flailing her limbs around on a crowded bus while being strapped infront of mummy who by the way is also lugging at least 5kg worth of dinner home.

K is honestly getting too heavy and 'long' for me to manage alone on the 3 bus-stop journey home so papa will be taking over bring-home duties, who is better equiped with 4 big wheels instead of mummy's bipeds.

Huge relief...my knees can finally stop aching due to the combined weight of baby and tingkat. Yet at the same time, feeling kinda wistful for by-gone days where I can sing and talk to her on the way home (on foot) and not risk being piaked on the face by 'octopus' arms (to Ms Tiyo, this particular type of arms seems to be a common affliction in HG too!)

Another Stage in Life

If everything goes well, I'll be moving house in mid-Dec. Wanted to pen this down before I go nuts from excessive brain work and gets institutionalised in IMH, which is very conviniently located right across the road from my new place.

First - The interior designer
He is a young Malaysian chap whom I thought look kinda like Qi Yiwu at certain angles. He has proven very competent at marrying ideals and designs so far and we are hopeful that the reno process will be a relatively uneventful one.

Second - furnishings
2015 happens to be Singapore's Golden Jubilee year and one can hardly go anywhere without seeing SG50. Retail shops seemed to have cottoned onto this and the Husband and I have been going to places which offers generous SG50 discounts. Congrats to those shops who got our money and are laughing their way to the bank. A heartfelt thank you to Ms J who told us abt her staff discount and we managed to save plenty on lighting stuff and such.

Third: The property agent
A VERY young chap who has probably made his first (or second. Or third) pot of gold and sports a Rolex and BMW. Smooth talker who seems to like psychological warfare and 见人说人话, 见鬼说鬼话. Definitely good traits for someone in the sales industry...

Fourth: The MIL
There are 2 living persons on earth whom I trust to take care of the youngest member of our family - her nanny and my MIL. The latter has thankfully jumped to the rescue (albeit on a vonlunteered basis) on the numerous occassions when we need to meet the ID for discussions on the weekends. The only time we tried bringing her to the ID's showroom, K nearly demolished it with her cos we had the audacity to get into discussion with the ID while she was waiting to be entertained, the cheek...the Husband and I were in very bad mood by the time the meeting ended and it was by unwritten agreement that K will never darken the hallway of our appointments with the ID ever again.

Finishing this post up with some pictures of the new house in its errrrr.....retro glory *shudder*

Time

If there is something that I miss from my former life (the one that is not filled with the pitter patter of two pairs of little and not-so-little feet, it would be time.

Time spent in bed, waking up only when I could sleep no more. Instead of leaping out of bed to feed hungry tiny mouths.

Time pampering myself with masks and lotion and primping. Instead of slapping on moisturiser (when I can remember to) and dashing out of the room to a crying toddler who is 'afraid' of being alone.

Time to go places and knowing that I have the entire day to myself without having to be home at a specific time. Instead of having to plan what I want to do on a rare day off so that I am in time to fetch the kids.

Time to warm the sofa and vegging out. Instead of having to cook the porridge one minute, hang out the laundry the next, fold dried laundry another minute, changing diapers/feeding water yet another.

Some weekends pass without my realising it and come Sunday nights, I am raring to go back to work just so the things that need to be done are properly planned without a ghost of a milk bottle or dirty diaper in sight.

Those were the days...

Sunday Nights

This entry is for posterity sake.

Something for me to bring up when K eventually brings her boyfriend home and I become an auntie sharing childhood stories that will make her squirm in embarassment (tit for tat darling...tit for tat)

Everytime Sunday nights come about, I flop to the sofa in exhaustion after 2 days of time with the second born. Not to say I don't enjoy playing with her but my temper is considerably shorter after playing her maid-in-waiting. Going back to work for 5 days suddenly seem preferable over 2 days of porridge spit, crankiness, water-drinking (don't ask...) and eardrum busting cries.

Cinderella rues 12 midnight but I love the stroke of 9pm when both kids are finally in bed and I get a few minutes of breather after spending the day being a MS Windows system (i.e. many 'programs' running at the same time).

Its 9.15pm now and sinking down on the sofa has never been more enjoyable. Bliss....

Road of Recovery

K had a follow-up review with her very cute PD Dr Chua today (I can see u rolling your eyeballs Ms TS...) and we are happy to announce that she is hitting the roads far far away from the Bronchiolitis Monster. The lung infection has cleared and though she will be coughing and phelgmy for the next 2 weeks or so, Dr Chua gave her a clean bill of health.

Now I can crash and burn.

Now we can see her smiling her toothy grin up at us again.

Now she's free from the Nebuliser, which has caused her much anxiety.

Welcome back baby; we missed your feisty antics cheekiness...

My Poor Baby...

Apart from the fevers and teething symptoms here and there, K was a pretty healthy baby.

Untill recently. And when the mighty falls, the mighty falls hard.

She came down with bronchiolitis on Tuesday and it made her a completely miserable kiddo, from the fevers (High ones, low ones, Saturday Night - you name it, she has it. Well, except dengue. Choi choi choi!!), phelgmy coughs, running nose, vomiting,  watery eyes yada yada yada...

Medication time consists of at least 3-4 medicines plus a 10 minute session with the nebuliser. Luckily enough she is (a) too fascinated with the new "美美" strapped around her nose and/or (b) too groggy (boo!) from the sickness to put up huge struggles when inhaling the vapors.

Somewhere, I think i heard a piece of Papa Yeow's heart broke as well. He takes every chance to carry K and gives her words of comfort each time after she pukes and gets startled by all the mess on her person.

Me? I will break down after this whole episode is over. Bronchiolitis is something that can turn nasty and messy if not nipped early - my heart aches when K turns her watery eyes on me and is a picture of utter misery and crankiness. But it is more important to get her out of the pits of misery and onto the road of recovery first.

There are many disruptions to our household's routine these few days and Papa Yeow and I are getting by on an average of 4 hours sleep each night, on TOP of all the exciting changes that are coming soon.

Now, can someone buy me a vodka shot pls!?

First Food Foray

For lack of a better blog title, I hereby declare that at the ripe old age of 13months, K is an "adult food" maiden no more!

I'm feeling a little guilt here, a dash of relief there and seeing a ray of light at the end of the Porridge tunnel finally.

So yesterday we made an impromptu pilgrimage to the Mecca of Furniture and Everything Cheap But Easily Spoilt- IKEA to get some stuff and home ideas. Set off at abt 11am which is usually the time K's porridge gets set down in the slow cooker to cook. To cut a long story short: lunch for her yesterday was IKEA pasta and salmon, which was ladden with salt and goodness knows what other kidney-damaging stuff.

1. Guilt - see "kidney damaging" above

2. Relief - no more having to set schedules on what time to cook porridge, add veggies, add protein since it is her primary source of food (not apparent in the favors she like to return in the form of spit out porridge though)

The point of this blog is:
The second-born gets started on many stuff earlier compared to her gor gor.

- adult food (I used to give death stares to anyone *ahem grandma/grandpa!* who dares to try giving T adult food before he turned 2. Even after he did, it was very hard on me to mentally let go and give him adult food...)

- bathtub vs shower (T was enjoying his baths till he grew too heavy for me to plonk down/lift up from the tub; K made the acquaintance of Mr Shower Head shortly after she became bipedal.)

I'm still trying to wrap my head ard the fact that K is taking sodium so young but with 2 kids, every nano-second not spent chopping veggies/mincing meat/boiling stock is oh so precious!

Random Ramblings

It's amazing how a bout of viral flu can bring forth materials for a new entry on my dusty, creaky blogspot (dun ask me what the connection is; maybe the meds for puking and LS-ing brought me to a new high which may possibly be illegal).

Looking at K over the weekend, I was suddenly struck by how she have grown.

A cheeky fun-loving girl stands where the teething monster used to crawl. Super manja too! She cosies up to YSY whenever he is carrying her (which is very frequently I assure u) and beams him a toothy smile (four teeth, to be exact). "Pa-pa!" in different intonations fill the house, which makes me feel murderous cos who was the one who cleaned most of her muck-covered bum? Who gets porridge facials when she hates her lunch?? Why isn't it "Ma-ma!" instead??

Anyway, this K is a vain pot for sure. Her wriggly body stills whenever I put on a 美美 on her head. It's a win- win situation; she looks adorably ridiculous and I get to doll her up without re enacting WWII.

Conclusion: she's hell on wheels when she doesn't get what she wants, but oh so cute in her fun moments. What's a mama to complain about?

A combination of what I have described above - toothy, vainpot and cheeky

Boys and Girls

The differences:

- Boy: perfectly fine being alone in the crib as long as Mummy is in sight or hears her voice.
- Girl: same scenario = the roof gets yelled down. And then some.

- Boy: nary a strand of hair till abt 3 years old (not sure if the constant desperate shaving attempts by parents had anything to do with this)
- Girl: mad scientist hair shortly after birth

- Boy: baby carrot fingers
- Girl: French bean fingers

- Boy: did not start walking or sprouting teeth until after 13 months of age (he did however, learnt to walk before he crawled)
- Girl: crawling and helping to clean the floor at 10 months, cruising and walking 2-3 weeks later

- Boy: a quiet baby (and then the Chatterbox Syndrome arrived with a vengeance in his preschooler years)
- Girl: babble babble babble. Able to identify Mama *happy jig*, Papa and 'thor thor*

- Boy: loves to play football with Furgie
- Girl: machiam see ghost <see 1st point in list>

- Boy: loves strangers and chatting with them
- Girl: stares and stares at them like they have 3 heads (not that she will know how a normal human shd look like..)

- Boy: 'homework' submitted to ancestors, parents, grandparents and whatever old fashioned rubbish....someone that Papa can roughhouse and kick a ball with.
- Girl: pretty dresses! Pretty ribbons! Barbie dolls! Sugar and spice and everything nice! (she does like to play with gor gor's cars compared to her own toys however..)

Apples from the same tree, but definitely apples of different tastes..

The Chronicles of Jackets

In his earlier years, T had a few memorable jackets that I remember well. Even today, I remember vividly the sequence in which the jackets were bought or gifted. The strange things that mummies remember eh? It's a pity that I dont have pictures of T wearing all of them, only a few.

It actually all started when we started bringing him to his ex-nanny at ard 6 months of age, who nagged us to put him in long sleeved PJs. His then wardrobe consisted of only short sleeves (in Spore's hot weather, we thought he would be roasting under long sleeves). In fact, the nanny almost had a fit on the first day we brought him over in the morning cos he was wearing a thin short sleeve shirt!

I was still in audit then and it so happened that my client's office was in Orchard Road, right oppostite a huge Espirit outlet and Xmas sales were going on. Hehe...*evil smirk*

Blame the bad lighting and camera angle, but he is actually wearing his first ever jacket - red hoodie from Espirit (30% off!). The zipper subsequently broke off but I still have the jacket with me, waiting for the day that it will re emerge and get loved by K. Not very likely at this stage though, cos K is too girly *happy dance* and looks sweeter in cardigans (thanks Auntie Sel!). Besides, the jacket is for up to 12 months and K is barely fitting into most of her 12-mth clothing as it is...

Next up: a really cool denim jacket from ZARA (I think) which came after the Espirit zipper broke off and was on discount as well. Rock on baby!! This jacket is also waiting in the wings to come out one day to grace the body of K. Maybe when she can walk properly and will look really cute in tutu skirts paired with this jacket and topped off with Mary-Janes. So chic!

At around the same time where I bought the denim jacket, T was gifted a similar looking jacket during Xmas by Auntie ET. If I didnt remember wrongly, T was wearing the ZARA jacket when we arrive at the party venue and Auntie ET was going "oh oh..." cos the one she bought was almost exactly the same but with a really functional hoodie. This jacket too is in the magic box of jackets waiting to see the light of day again. Its a pity I don't have a picture of the hoodie denim jacket to show.

My second most favourite jacket after the red hoodie cos it is lightweight, easy to go gai gai and memorable cos it was the one I bought him when he first started childcare.

I didn't really like this cardigan when I first saw it in Mothercare cos the grey material reminded me of the old hospital bed blankets for some reason but got it in the end cos it made him look really Harvard geek - a change from the usual "rugged" look that mama always puts him in,  as Auntie Sel described it. T is still wearing it to this day (its meant for 3-4 year olds)....amazing how a few bazillion rounds in the washing machine can do that to stretchy cotton materials ;P

There u have it - mummy's favourite T jackets!

Fishy Business

The little lady in my home has very strange tastebuds.

Not that she is a finicky eater or anything, but K likes fishy stuff. Literally. And not just the average steamed fish mind u; it's steamed fish with fishy stock e.g. dried oysters, scallops, ikan billis etc.

Take yesterday for example: I was looking for a quick fix for her dinner porridge cos I was tired out from a long weekend's chores. So the stock was made from dried oysters and protein was a piece of threadfin - just dump everything into the slow cooker for it to work its magic.

It could be me but the resulting porridge smelt fishier than ever but K couldn't get enough of it. Considering that she had an early dinner (her milk feed was abt 2 hours ago), the little lady was very cooperative in opening her mouth wide for each spoonful waved in front of her, which isn't always the case. If the day's menu is not to her tastebuds, she will turn away after a few mouthfuls (after the initial hunger is gone) or deliberately clamp her mouth shut. Worse, u get treated to a porridge 'mask' if she really really doesn't like it. I've learnt to dodge fast.

Besides all this fishy business, I no longer can eat anything in peace, especially breakfast. Guess who will be in her Exersaucer batting her oh so cute eyelids and hee-heeing at me for a few bites of roti? To keep whatever little peace there is left in the house, K goes down for a nap (or at least, back in the cot in her room) before I can eat lunch or dinner in peace. So far so good...she gets a toy to play with in the cot and I get fungi-free lunch/dinner.

Goodbye Mr Lee

Mr Lew Kuan Yew passed away on 23 March 2015, leaving behind a lasting legacy and a grateful Singapore forever in his debt.

I am not here to wax lyrical about how great he was, how great his contributions to our island state were. There are too many articles circulating around Facebook and newspapers for that which has probably been shared to death (no pun intended). He may very well be smiling all the way to wherever dead folks go at the thought of joining his beloved wife again.

I wanted to write this blog as a memory of what has transpired since the announcement of his death. From the 8-hour queues by the public just to enter the Parliment House where Mr Lee's body lies in state, to the anecdotes on how loving he was towards his wife and the red box where he kept his official work, to my visit to Tanjong Pagar CC where he was MP once (the fact that it was within walking distance from my office didn't hurt either).

The latest drama brewing in my handphone now is an initiative by SMRT to extend their operating hours till midnight so that people can pay their last respects at the Parliment House. Some idiots on FB took this chance to ask for FOC rides or post comments on how they hope the trains do not break down from overuse. I rate these idiots down there with the idiots who asked when a public holiday will be declared to commemorate LKY's death. I took the chance to lambast the morons who posted stupid comments...

A colleague and I went down to Tg Pagar CC to pay our respects to him as well. It was a somber moment as the fact sank in that this much revered (or much feared, depending on which Singaporean you are talking to) powerhouse is gone. Dead just like many other humans before him and plenty others will be, after him. But one thing is for sure: a greater man we will never see in this lifetime.

Bouquets galore (we contributed 6 champagne roses and accessorizing flowers and leaves)
In memory of Mr Lee

A picture dedicated to him on his 75th birthday

Thank you sir, for all that you have done for us. Rest in peace, and may your reunion with Mrs Lee be a happy one...

Just Cruisin'

Some updates on the teething monster here:

As suddenly as the symptoms came, K's teething woes have subsided (for the time being) and she is back to her usual sunshiny self. She is smiling at everyone who does funny stuff to make her laugh and is generally in a good mood most of the time (except for times where Bad Mummy actually dares to pour water down her gullet so that she doesn't shrivel up with dehydration). Thank goodness, I say! I can even put her straight to bed without having to pat/rock/all sorts of funny things to make her go beddy-bye while my lunch or dinner is quietly growing fungi in its bowl.

Another milestone achieved: she can pull herself up from a sleeping position to standing up now. Probably not long till she starts a-cruisin' and begin her collection of bua dukus (a bump never kill anyone, except if u got it from falling from the 10th floor. Then a bua duku will perhaps be the least of your worries...).

Ending off with some random pix of Princess K here.

Really look like a boy here, much to Mummy's consternation

MS DOS vs Windows

I once came across an analogy while scanning one of those books which try to explain how men and women are aliens from completely different planets:

" Men are MS DOS systems - they are programmed to only do one task at a time.

Women on the other hand, behave like the Windows OS - they can put on mascara while juggling 2 babies with the other arm AND talk to their friends on the phone."

Or something to that effect.

The point is: males can't multi-task for squat while women excel in it. Which rings quite true in the HG household, at least where the minors are concerned.

When T was a baby, he hits his milestones like a man (well, the typical man type anyway), aka singularly and systematically. There were signs that he will be reaching a milestone soon and he got there gradually.

With K, I am reminded of an octopus. One who wants to stick her tentacles in every single pie (a Jack of all trades if u will).

One day, she is trying to crawl, next minute she's trying to do cruising pull-ups, yet another she's learning to sit on her own. As of now, she's hitting many milestones at the same time but doing each one only satisfactorily. Mum's pride is one thing, but I am also objective when looking at her milestones. Wobbly crawls, half-completed pull ups and strange sitting positions does that to u.

But they sure make me smile, especially after a long day at work!

Girly Boy?

This is the desktop background on my work comp now - a picture of K and the Husband when we were out one day. Point of highlight: K was wearing a pink halter sundress.

Words of emphasis: Pink. Sundress.

So I was at work this morning with an extended desktop (simply put: a laptop with an external monitor) cos civil servants all have to work with lots and lots of info/data eh? Anyway, a colleague walked past my work station and asked: "Oooo! Is that your son?"

I shall not break into an angry tirade here (though I wanted to at that point in time).

PINK!
SUNDRESS!!

Which part of those 2 words sends (misguided) messages to your neurological faculties that she is a boy??? Gah...

Chua Sai

I love my boss. I really do.

I am one of those lucky workers who do not roll their eyes when talking about their superior nor at the risk of incurring $500 fines by wanting to spit at the mention of their boss's name.

It is her boss who scares me. Yep, my big boss.

Right from day 1 where I had my 1st (and only) interview at my current organisation, my hairs stood up when Ms B sat in during the interview. Even now, an innocuous comment from her has the ability to turn me into a gibbering mess. Not very impressive on the few ocassions I had to have one-on-one discussions with her.

Had another of those gibbering sessions with her today and my heart was heavy when I left her office room, wishing I could have done better. Now I know how my friends felt when they met my papa last time. Sobz ~

Sunday Night

Not sure I shd be sad or happy now that its Sunday night. Sad cos work starts again in approximately 10 hours. Happy cos I dun hv to jaga a teething baby and a chatterbox at home.

As sudden as they came, K's teething symptoms has subsided somewhat, probably cos the little edges have finally poked through her gums. But she is still demanding a lot of attention cos someone MUST be in her line of vision at all times. Guess who's the fall guy? I am not complaining, but there are still chores to be done and tasks to be completed (yeah, I'm looking at u Laundry Basket!) and its not possible to just be there all the time.

As for T, heaven forbid those lips will stop yakking! Won't say much on this, but he has gotten more than a few scoldings for talking and talking and talking when I really do need a moment's peace. I admit: Mother Theresa's patience I have not.

Goodbye Sunday night. It has been a trying one, like the many ones before u. And in all likelihood, the ones ahead....

Saying Goodbye

We bid farewell to T's first school bag yesterday.

It's a Skip Hop frog bag which was acquired after great pains cos it is a model that has already stopped production but the little owner likes green and so Mummy did her best to get a bag which is green AND is not camouflage.

The froggie bag served T well for two years before, as Papa describes it (and I quote per verbatim): "the frog turned into a toad."

A very strange description perhaps, but an apt one. The pictures below show why.

The frog which turned into a speckled toad (see the dirty stains on its belly)

His new bag
(yep, it's a chiong one. I saw the light and realised that he doesn't actually need such a good bag which will only land up being manhandled anyway)

The Evolution of Bags

It used to be that I carry large bags when going out. But with kids, that has very much changed.

Evolution of the bag sizes B.C. (before children) to A.1.C. (after 1 child) to A.2.C. (after 2 children):

Before Children (where I can TOTE my life around with me when going out)

After 1 Child (where I squeeze in only essential stuff. This is in addition to the mandatory diaper bag.)

After 2 Children (reduced to the bare essentials in my teeny wristlet, on top of the diaper bag AND the pre-schooler stuff that couldn't fit into his backpack)

*Happie Dance*

So I have been in my current civil service job for a year and a half now and the time where my mandatory 2-year contract is coming to an end in July.

Since the end of 2014, I have been very gao wei as to whether I should (1) start sending out resumes in case the emplacement doesn't happen; or (2) visit temples more often to 拜拜 that I will still hv this job come July 2015. I keep telling Le Husband that he better have enough money to support me if I get sacked. 😢😣😦

Anyway, for some strange reason,  my boss started handing out presents for the kiddos of everyone in the department today (all are already parents). Unrelated note: I wonder if she is quitting after she delivers (she is 8 months pregnant now. With twin daughters.) and hence the Thank You presents. On everyone's present is a handwritten note and I was mentally doing a jig when I saw mine. Cos it reads, among other things: "May you shine in the many years to come in <name of my organisation>."

Of course I may be reading too much into things but surely her words are a good sign right? Right??

Starting K1

Papa Yeow dug out this website where u can print out Chinese characters of your own choice to practise writing. No prizes for guessing who was the "lucky" recipient of this new discovery?

Car Washing

The boy is a fan of car-washing.

When weekends come around and Papa drives near/by his regular petrol station near our house, "Papa 我们可以去洗车吗?" becomes inevitable.

T likes watching the soap suds and pretending he is being splashed with dirty water. Go figure...

Teething Pains

Baby K just gave me an unexpected New Year gift - knowledge of how a teething baby would NOT drink milk.

She has been showing signs of teething for a while now. Only that Mummy did not recognise these signs cos she has never experienced them with K's big brother. Signs include sudden choking due to excessive saliva, running nose even when she is not having a cold or anything, pulling of ears and of course, the requisite unexplained crankiness. The crankiness is still hovering around and just half an hour ago, the latest additionto the stable of teething symptoms: rejection of milk.

Aiyoh...I am no religious person but the only notion in my mind now is "This must be karma returned two-fold." since T absolutely DID NOT have any symptoms of teething except perhaps a little bit more drool than usual. He was a sunshiny baby right up to when those molars were emerging.

K is a completely different kettle of fish altogether. It gets very frustrating when I do not know why she is wailing and hence can't take the necessary actions to calm her down. But it was a Eureka! moment when I spotted that budding tooth just a few days back. The rejection of milk just now is quite scary though - there was a good 2 ounces of milk left and when I tried to give her the bottle again after a while, she acted like she saw a monster when the said bottle was put in front of her.

Truly a female Tarurean...unpredictable and stubborn (she clamped her lips shut at the sight of the pretty little pink bottle). Like mother, like daughter.
